Marc decided to become an RAC Patrolman as he enjoys helping people
at the roadside and gets great satisfaction from doing so. However,
this isn’t the career that Marc originally wanted to follow ….
like a lot of young boys growing up, he wanted to be a fire fighter.
I asked Marc to explain a typical day in his role, here’s what
he said:
“Every callout that I attend is different and it really isn’t
just a car that you’re fixing - it could be the start to someone’s
holiday or an important appointment that they may miss out on.”
Here are a few more questions I asked Marc about his role:
What is the best moment you’ve experienced so far whilst
at work?
I would have to say the time I went to a callout in Oxford. It was a
broken down vehicle being driven by … Ronnie Barker! It was really
funny. (Not the break down of course!)
What is the most rewarding thing about your job?
Just knowing that I’m part of an important team that helps all
types of people with their everyday motoring needs.
What do you least like about your job?
The weather can be a bit of a downer! When it’s raining and windy
it makes the job a lot harder to do.
What is the most dangerous situation that you’ve encountered?
Working at the roadside is very dangerous nowadays with the roads being
so busy and people could be a bit more considerate on the roads. After
all, nobody picks where to break down it’s just as and when.
Describe one of the funniest moments you’ve experienced
in your job….
Erm, going to a young couple locked out of their car down a country
lane with all their clothes locked in the car, it didn’t take
much working out what they had been up to!
In your experience, what is the most common reason for being
called out?
Keys locked in the vehicles, using the wrong fuel , and good old flat
batteries.
How do you like to relax and unwind?
I like a drop of red wine or a real ale.
What are your hobbies/interests outside of work?
I enjoy Enduro riding which is a motorbike sport. I also love walking
and gardening!
What’s your favourite holiday destination?
I like most of Greece, France is ok and there are some lovely places
in Derbyshire - we are lucky for the countryside.
What is your favourite film?
The Green Mile is one of my top films. I know this isn’t a film
but I do like some good comedy - Peter Kay is so funny.
